“Many students dread the thought of taking advanced math courses, however anticipated difficulties with accuracy can quickly change to sense making for mathematical reasoning by aligning algebraic formulas to illustrations with my new book, The Coordinate Geometry Project (CGP),” said Reverend Jerry Rankin, CGP’s author. The CGP is arranged for students to enjoy synthesizing algebraic formulas, by graphing a point on the y-axis and choosing a slope to trace endpoints. Students are then challenged to explore the relevance for algebra with thirteen coordinate geometry applications.
Mathematics is an exact science! As students work through CGP several times with different choices of variables, they navigate numerous related patterns to build a comprehensive understanding of algebraic relationships. The orientation perfects students’ problem solving skills by enabling simple operations to locate and self-correct errors while completing each project. Each completion of CGP sharpens students’ knowledge of algebra’s intricate processes at a faster pace with accelerated reasoning for solving ACT problems within sixty minutes. The repetitive experiences challenge students to build a solid foundation for growth with 100% accuracy within ten completions.
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) student’s knowledge of algebra while solving coordinate geometry problems has been a major barrier for more than forty years. The NAEP began assessing students in 1973 and reported an average math score for 17-year-olds as 304 out of 500. Since 1973 students have been provided calculators, computers, software, apps and online support for mathematics. However, the average math score for 17-year-olds only increased to 306 by 2013. The content lessons assessed by NEAP math scores of 350 and higher are included as CGP’s algebra processes, which will revolutionize the need for sense making for reasoning for years of cumulative math lessons.
Learning is a process of building on prior knowledge! Reverend Rankin’s approach emphasizes students’ prior knowledge, which relates algebraic processes to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This enables students to synthesize operations with the difference between arithmetic and algebra with their capacity to decode math symbols and apply rules for signed numbers. This simplicity engages students to validate a comprehensive understanding with familiar references, rather than expecting to make sense of processes that often seem unfamiliar or too difficult.
CGP’s alignment of basic operations enable elementary grades to process algebraic concepts! While CGP’s primary audience has been pre-college students, even upper elementary grade students can build their math skills with relevance for solving algebraic problems. Similar applications enable students to break down multiple steps for algebra and experience sense making and reasoning. This implementation will allow more years for elementary students to demonstrate proficiency with problem solving for exams like the Common Core, Smarter Balanced Assessment and ACT college entrance exam.
“Over the years, students’ response to illustrations for algebra taught me how to teach them,” he said. “I discovered that placing an emphasis on their knowledge of basic operations engages sense making and enabled students, even in earlier grades to figure out how to navigate solutions for algebraic concepts with accuracy.”
Mathematics is a universal language! Students can now shift from expecting difficulties in learning mathematics to willingness with momentum while validating their comprehension for problem solving with accuracy for high achievements in preparation for advanced studies and 21st century careers. “Students of all ages can build a solid foundation and enjoy their God-given capacity to excel in challenging course work with illustrations of math’s patterns and relationships,” Rev. Rankin said. He has spent tens of thousands of hours perfecting arrangements with illustrations to highlight relevance in several metro-Detroit and Pontiac classrooms. He observed the way CGP helped students overcome rote learning by associating their knowledge to master algebraic concepts. Now expectations for college admission and academic scholarships will become quite achievable, because 90% of the ACT assesses students’ knowledge with algebraic processes. Rev. Rankin has used his orientation from the CGP to teach Wayne State University students to strengthen their algebraic skills for collegiate course work.

Rankin, an innovative community math educator, has developed an engaging approach to advance math education that combines pedagogies that accelerate students’ learning of algebraic and geometric logics while supporting acquisition of basic computational skills,” commented Edward P. St. John, University of Michigan’s Algo D. Henderson Collegiate Professor of Education. “His innovative CGP Student Workbook can be used by math educators in urban high schools that are responding to mandates to increase math standards for students who are not prepared for the rigors of required curriculum.”
Rev. Rankin earned a B. S. in Industrial Management from Lawrence Technological University and Masters of Biblical Studies, from Ashland Theological Seminary. He serves as an Associate Minister at Detroit’s Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Nathan Johnson.
